Yes, blogging has been a bit slow while I’m going about making changes to the site. No, the changes aren’t up yet, but soon! I think they’ll take a more organic route and pop up here and there all around the site, as their ready, over the next month or so.

Anywhoo, the reason for today’s post, a quick update for my California clients. It looks like success on the Rabies Waiver/Quarantine issue and The Rabies Challenge Fund is supporting the bill now. According to their Facebook page, the wording regarding quarantine for animals too ill to have a rabies vaccination has been removed. So, bravo to all who voiced their objections and it’s nice to see a positive response from lawmakers. Although there seems to be wording that could create in areas where rabies exposure is high, a 1 or 2 year rabies vaccination requirement vs. the current 3 year, the folks at Rabies Challenge Fund don’t believe that’s going to be an issue (again check out their Facebook page) or something that would be implemented.

Also, those of you with a rabies vaccine coming due for your animals soon, drop me an email with “rabies vaccination due” in the subject line and I’ll email you some ways that ThetaHealing™ can possibly help mitigate any negative effects that might occur. Or, always, feel free to call 505.467.8112.

Many of you know my opinions about over vaccination in companion animals and my support for The Rabies Challenge Fund. As a native Californian, although I no longer reside in my beautiful home state, I still care about my many wonderful clients there and their beloved animal companions. There have been some recent changes to the laws in California regarding rabies exemption for dogs with compromised health for whom a rabies vaccination could cause permanent damage to their immune systems or even possibly be fatal. The change requires these dogs be kept in quarantine until they are well enough to be vaccinated for rabies. Will a dog with cancer, once in remission, ever have an immune system that could handle a rabies vaccination? Would that dog be required to be in quarantine for the rest of it’s life?

What about a situation like the one I faced years ago with my beloved dog Kaya who had terminal cancer and a rabies waiver and who because of the quality of her life (it was easily sustained) I chose (honoring her wishes) to allow her to live out her life to natural completion. With this new law would that have meant we would have had to make the choice to have her spend her final days in quarantine away from her loving family or euthanize her to avoid that even though she was not ready to leave? I feel this new legislation is a sad, sad mistake (Kaya certainly would have) and those at The Rabies Challenge Fund agree.

If you haven’t heard of The Rabies Challenge Fund, you should definitely check them out as they are doing some very important work for our beloved animal companions. They have been doing research for a number of years and are finding that an animal who has been vaccinated once for rabies retains immunity for the rest of it’s life.

You can also find The Rabies Challenge Fund on Facebook. There you can find out even more on this subject and make a comment or fan (I know it’s “like” now, but I still prefer “fan”) their page and let your other Facebook friends know about all they do. Here is the piece from their site about this legislation with some ways you can take action. Please think seriously about doing just that as it could save the life of an animal you know . . .

NOTICE: CALIFORNIA DOG OWNERS

On 12/21/09 Dr. Ben Sun (916) 552-9744, Interim Chief of California’s Veterinary Public Health Section, designated ALL COUNTIES in California as “rabies areas”

The declaration states: “The Director of the Department of Public Health has declared all counties in California as ‘rabies areas’ in 2010. This declaration is based on the ongoing cyclic nature of rabies in California wildlife, and the resulting threat of exposure to domestic animals, livestock, and humans.”

An April 5, 2010 amendment to AB2000 which seeks to add a medical exemption clause for sick dogs in designated “rabies areas,” would included the following language:

“(2) A dog exempt from the canine antirabies vaccination shall be kept quarantined as directed by the local health officer, until thedog’s medical condition has resolved and the administration of the canine antirabies vaccine occurs.”

This bill is currently in the Senate Rules Committee for consideration. The phone number for the California Senate Rules Committee is (916) 651-4120 and the Chair of the Committee is Senator Darrell Steinberg e-mail: Senator.Steinberg@senate.ca.gov Phone: (916) 651-4006

Under current law, the Department of Public Health is authorized to require annual rabies vaccinations in designated “rabies areas,” which includes ALL counties in California for 2010. With the passage of AB2000 as amended on April 5th, dogs with medical exemptions would be required to be quarantined, which could be in an off-site pound or facility as determined by the local health officer, until their medical condition resolves or they are given a rabies vaccine.

I know I promised a blog about “being different” in the world in relation to our companion animals. I promise you will have that tomorrow/Wednesday at the latest. In the meantime . . .

There’s been a lot more research coming out about the connection between cancer and micro-chips in our companion animals http://www.antichips.com/cancer/index.html. Many of us who have adopted or rescued companion animals did not have a choice as to whether to have a micro-chip implanted in them or not (which I have railed against for ages). When I have had the option, I have chosen against it. Sadly, now the research is supporting what I and many holistic animal practitioners have feared would be the case that time would tell.

I am grateful that I now know how, through ThetaHealing™, to mitigate the negative impact of the radiation in things like cellphones, computers, pet micro-chips, etc. It is not a one time fix, but the process can hold for several months and it is part of the services I now offer my clients as a ThetaHealer®. What’s also tre cool through ThetaHealing™ is that you can also download the device with things like unconditional love. None of this impacts the service the device was designed to provide.

So, why am I posting this today, well the micro-chip research had shown up in by inbox a few weeks before I started the blog and although wanting to be on top of the latest to keep you all informed, I was debating whether or not to get into all that at this juncture. I am finding a need here to make sure I can offer alternatives and assistance when I deliver bad news of this kind. The ThetaHealing™ information became a piece of the puzzle. When a really cool product showed up in my inbox today that could be a good alternative option to micro-chipping, I thought I could offer sufficient good news and options to overcome the bad news and so we find ourselved with this post today. The email about the cool product comes from the folks at moderncat (I’ve mentioned them on my Facebook page before) a very cool blog for really cool cat products that I follow regularly. This product would be great for dogs, too, and the folks at moderncat are having a giveaway on this product right now. So, go check it out at: http://www.moderncat.net/2010/04/26/protect-your-pet-while-helping-others-with-blanketid-bonus-giveaway/.

Okay, so the email about Cocoa Mulch and it’s toxicity for our companion dogs and cats has made it’s way into email boxes again. Now I don’t use Cocoa Mulch, never have, but after receiving that first email I received and doing a bit of research I decided that having my yard smell like chocolate wasn’t in the best interest of other living beings. Besides having my yard smell like chocolate all the time would just cause me to crave more chocolate and although a nice bite of dark chocolate every now and then is good not only for ones health but ones soul, it just seemed like asking for trouble. It’s been a few years since I last received one of those emails. So, when one appeared in my email box a few days back, I thought the best avenue for spreading this info again would be to include it here in my blog.

I also felt that to include a mass email as a subject for one of my blog entries I needed a responsible approach and thought going to one of my favorite sources for forwarded information emails, whether they be true or not, http://www.snopes.com would be the solution. You see one of the problems that now arises from these often frightening emails is so often they are only about spreading fear of one kind or another and nothing else and have little to no proof to back them up. So, when something like the Cocoa Mulch email comes around it seems like just more of the same, when it’s not. There are issues with Cocoa Mulch and toxicity for our companion dogs and cats. It’s something one should give serious consideration to before using (like clumping clay cat litters – we’ll do that one real soon) whether you have 4 legged companion animals or not as the wildlife in your yard could also possibly be impacted. If it’s something you are already using, please, do some research as you might find you want to reconsider. The information shows that there’s enough to also say, in some instances, it could be safe to use as well. I prefer to err on the side of extreme caution in instances where all kinds of safer options exist and so I made the choice not to use Cocoa Mulch. And, besides, I actually like my yard to smell of vanilla (it’s great for resolving the smell of animal waste of all kinds). You have to make that call yourself. Make it a well informed one and check out this page at snopes: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp
