No Winners! Changing the name anyway . . .

No one entered the contest and so, there is no winner. And, I still don’t have a new name for my blog.  I’ve thought about running the contest another month, but in all honesty, really not feeling it.  Stay tuned for a temporary name change soon . . .

My newest addiction

Every now and then, I may just feel the need to write about something other than this site, our amazing animal companions, or anything animal related at all.  Right now, the smell wafting past my portal (covered patio for those of you not in the Southwest) has caused one of these such moments.

Santa Fe is often mentioned in terms of the aromatic qualities in the air. In the colder months, it’ the smell of pinon burning in the kivas (fireplaces). I love the smell of pinon in the air (it’s so wonderfully comforting, I may never think of Christmas without it again), but there is an aroma that comes a bit earlier in the year that sends me swooning. It’s the wondrous, deep, heady smell of roasting New Mexico green chiles.  I am feeling a need to wax poetic here and I can’t promise you anything new, because goodness knows here in NM enough has been written about the chiles here that I can’t imagine anything more ever being written.  But there is something about that aroma that makes anything having to do with them (even writing about them) irresistible.

Yes, it’s that time of year again. Harvest time in Hatch, NM. The largest crops are there, but there are chile farms spotted all along the Rio Grande’s wonderfully rich farmlands (yes, wonderfully rich farmland does exist along the rivers here in NM). This is only my second August in Santa Fe, but I seem to recollect this aroma and the first hints of fall coincided, so, to me, it seems a bit early.  If that’s the case, wonderful! Please do not confuse, this is not the jalapeno or the anaheim from so many wonderful dishes back home in California and other locales.  This is the native New Mexico green chile (and red), sometimes referred to as Hatch green chiles.  Their amazingly intoxicating aroma travels through the air from all directions as there are stands and drum roasters set up in just about every parking lot or shopping center in town during harvest season.

These are the chiles from whence the official New Mexico state question “Red or Green?” emanates. To many the question is actually “Red, Green or Christmas?” “Christmas” being a bit of both red and green on just about anything you can imagine. The New Mexican penchant for continually finding new things to add chile to is something to admire. For me the answer is most often green. I do occasionally like a good red (especially in winter) or xmas for a change of pace, but my heart and taste buds are truly dedicated to the green. There is something so heady about NM green.

They are also a blessing at 7200 feet as they have a way of impacting the lungs as to make breathing easier. At least my addiction makes me believe that. I truly have no scientific facts to back that up, but it sure does feel that way. It can take a while to truly adjust to life above 7000 feet and last year, they were my blessing. This year, they’re not so much medicinal in terms of breathing, but they do have their own luscious and unique high of sorts. Eating New Mexico green chiles makes me happy. Literally puts a smile on my face. Completely and totally out of my control, I eat NM green chiles and there it is. Happy. Big toothy grin. Giggles. It could just be the heat . . .

Their heat can make you feel like the roof of your mouth is being peeled away, but, not always, as you can get NM green chile in mild, medium, hot and scalding. The taste that makes them such a necessary part of my life isn’t compromised by the degree of heat. They are delicious however you like or can handle them. I don’t believe they harm the way other chiles do, even in their hottest form. Don’t get me wrong, while ingesting them at their hottest they will challenge you at every bite. Unlike many other scalding chiles, however, I find the depth and breadth of damage to be milder in the long run no matter how hot the original interaction may be. It’s not a lasting or a damaging heat, yet it does leave behind it’s own unique sensation. A pleasant numbing . . . that actually causes me to crave more.

They have a wonderful smokey, piquant and earthy flavor that can turn a grilled cheese sandwich or a cheeseburger into an otherworldly experience. For those of you not from here, you can order the native chiles fresh from a number of farms here in NM and have them shipped to you. I would suggest you do, as although the popularity of chiles is rising in the US, there are fewer and fewer chile farms here in NM. It’s sad. This native chile, that is so wondrous and can be adapted in so many non-New Mexican cuisine ways, deserves recognition beyond the Rocky Mountain region.  Try some, even if you aren’t visiting.  Just do a google search and have them sent to you.  No, you won’t have the drum roasters we have spotted all over town, but you will relish the smell of them roasting in your own kitchen.  Trust me.  It’s a lovely addiction to foster.

Free teleseminar coming soon . . .

Wanted to let everyone know I’m putting together a free teleseminar and will have more details on that soon, including the topic and how to sign up.

So, if you haven’t already subscribed, here, you might think about doing so, now, or keep checking back as more details should be up within a week or so.

I’m very excited about trying the teleseminar format as a means to connect with people about their animals and the ways in which animal communication, shamanism and ThetaHealing™ can benefit them and their animal companions. It’s a great way to take the lecture at a local pet store and turn it into something more impacting that reaches a wider and more varied audience. Plus, it allows me to do it my way vs. fitting it into a format and/or topic that meets the needs or concerns of the shop or venue. That’s the part that makes me happiest! There will be Q&A included as well. I can’t wait . . . What about you?

Good News: A quick update on CA Rabies legislation . . .

Yes, blogging has been a bit slow while I’m going about making changes to the site. No, the changes aren’t up yet, but soon! I think they’ll take a more organic route and pop up here and there all around the site, as their ready, over the next month or so.

Anywhoo, the reason for today’s post, a quick update for my California clients. It looks like success on the Rabies Waiver/Quarantine issue and The Rabies Challenge Fund is supporting the bill now. According to their Facebook page, the wording regarding quarantine for animals too ill to have a rabies vaccination has been removed. So, bravo to all who voiced their objections and it’s nice to see a positive response from lawmakers. Although there seems to be wording that could create in areas where rabies exposure is high, a 1 or 2 year rabies vaccination requirement vs. the current 3 year, the folks at Rabies Challenge Fund don’t believe that’s going to be an issue (again check out their Facebook page) or something that would be implemented.

Also, those of you with a rabies vaccine coming due for your animals soon, drop me an email with “rabies vaccination due” in the subject line and I’ll email you some ways that ThetaHealing™ can possibly help mitigate any negative effects that might occur. Or, always, feel free to call 505.467.8112.

More on CA Rabies Waiver/Quarantine issue via The Rabies Challenge Fund

Here is the latest on the rabies waiver/quarantine issue in CA via The Rabies Challenge Fund’s Facebook page, for those of you who aren’t following this there:

The Rabies Challenge Fund UPDATE AB2000: Assembly Member Curt Hagman and his staff are responding to the public outcry over the quarantine clause in AB 2000 and working hard to find suitable language to substitute.

www.fox40.com
SACRAMENTO – The owners of dogs who are too ill to get rabies vaccinations fear that a bill designed to help them will do just the opposite. Assemblyman Curt Hagman of Chino Hills is proposing a law that allows local jurisdictions to exempt animals if vaccinations endanger their health. …

Please keep making contact with those listed in the previous post to make your opinions known and to support Assemblyman Hagman’s attempts to change the wording in this legislation.  And click on any of the links in this post for The Rabies Challenge Fund to support all they are doing.

Attention California Dog Owners per The Rabies Challenge Fund

Many of you know my opinions about over vaccination in companion animals and my support for The Rabies Challenge Fund. As a native Californian, although I no longer reside in my beautiful home state, I still care about my many wonderful clients there and their beloved animal companions. There have been some recent changes to the laws in California regarding rabies exemption for dogs with compromised health for whom a rabies vaccination could cause permanent damage to their immune systems or even possibly be fatal. The change requires these dogs be kept in quarantine until they are well enough to be vaccinated for rabies. Will a dog with cancer, once in remission, ever have an immune system that could handle a rabies vaccination? Would that dog be required to be in quarantine for the rest of it’s life?

What about a situation like the one I faced years ago with my beloved dog Kaya who had terminal cancer and a rabies waiver and who because of the quality of her life (it was easily sustained) I chose (honoring her wishes) to allow her to live out her life to natural completion. With this new law would that have meant we would have had to make the choice to have her spend her final days in quarantine away from her loving family or euthanize her to avoid that even though she was not ready to leave? I feel this new legislation is a sad, sad mistake (Kaya certainly would have) and those at The Rabies Challenge Fund agree.

If you haven’t heard of The Rabies Challenge Fund, you should definitely check them out as they are doing some very important work for our beloved animal companions. They have been doing research for a number of years and are finding that an animal who has been vaccinated once for rabies retains immunity for the rest of it’s life.

You can also find The Rabies Challenge Fund on Facebook. There you can find out even more on this subject and make a comment or fan (I know it’s “like” now, but I still prefer “fan”) their page and let your other Facebook friends know about all they do. Here is the piece from their site about this legislation with some ways you can take action. Please think seriously about doing just that as it could save the life of an animal you know . . .

NOTICE: CALIFORNIA DOG OWNERS

On 12/21/09 Dr. Ben Sun (916) 552-9744, Interim Chief of California’s Veterinary Public Health Section, designated ALL COUNTIES in California as “rabies areas”

The declaration states: “The Director of the Department of Public Health has declared all counties in California as ‘rabies areas’ in 2010. This declaration is based on the ongoing cyclic nature of rabies in California wildlife, and the resulting threat of exposure to domestic animals, livestock, and humans.”

An April 5, 2010 amendment to AB2000 which seeks to add a medical exemption clause for sick dogs in designated “rabies areas,” would included the following language:

“(2) A dog exempt from the canine antirabies vaccination shall be kept quarantined as directed by the local health officer, until thedog’s medical condition has resolved and the administration of the canine antirabies vaccine occurs.”

This bill is currently in the Senate Rules Committee for consideration. The phone number for the California Senate Rules Committee is (916) 651-4120 and the Chair of the Committee is Senator Darrell Steinberg e-mail: Senator.Steinberg@senate.ca.gov Phone: (916) 651-4006

Under current law, the Department of Public Health is authorized to require annual rabies vaccinations in designated “rabies areas,” which includes ALL counties in California for 2010. With the passage of AB2000 as amended on April 5th, dogs with medical exemptions would be required to be quarantined, which could be in an off-site pound or facility as determined by the local health officer, until their medical condition resolves or they are given a rabies vaccine.
